Why is the M119 engine so legendary?
Unlike its successor, the M113 engine found in the C215 generation—which was simplified to cut costs and meet emissions standards—the M119 engine in the C140 utilizes a complex Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) layout with four valves per cylinder and features exceptionally robust internal components. It delivers an incredibly strong and confident surge of power during mid-to-high-speed acceleration. Furthermore, its longevity is legendary; with proper maintenance, it can easily run for hundreds of thousands of miles without needing a major overhaul.
Features That Still Hold Up Today
Even by modern standards, the features packed into this late-1990s vehicle do not feel outdated. In fact, many of its detail-oriented features offer a sense of luxury and ceremony that surpasses modern cars:
  • Pneumatic Soft-Close Doors (Closing Assist): Both the wide side doors and the trunk lid come standard with a soft-close function. By gently pulling the door close, a pneumatic PSE pump located in the trunk quietly and completely vacuums the door shut.

  • Automatic Seatbelt Presenters: Because the B-pillars on this two-door coupe are positioned far back, a mechanical arm inside the vehicle automatically extends forward once the passenger sits down and turns on the ignition. It gracefully “hands” the seatbelt right to the driver’s shoulder and elegantly retracts once buckled.
  • Double-Glazed Windows (Acoustic Glass): The side windows feature incredibly thick, double-layered laminated glass with a vacuum insulation layer sealed in between. This provides unmatched cabin quietness while effectively preventing fogging and blocking UV rays.
  • 14-Way Power Leather Seats: Wrapped in premium Nappa leather, these seats feature multi-position memory and heating. They even include pneumatic lumbar support bladders built right into the seat cores.
  • Backup Assist Markers (Early vs. Late Models): On early models, two small chrome rods would slowly rise about two centimeters from the rear corners of the car during reversing to help the driver gauge the vehicle’s edges. By the final 1999 model year, some vehicles had been upgraded to early-generation electronic parking sensors.
